Print Innovation Award

sponsored by Argent Media
Recognising the Local Authority or Government Department that has demonstrated the most innovative use of print in communicating with citizens or the workforce.

2011 Winner: Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) - staying legal materials
The Vehicle and Operator Services Agency (VOSA) has, for many years produced material aimed at operators for dissemination to their drivers. Research has shown that while operators want to read all the information that will affect their business, drivers just want to find out what they need to know in order to comply. VOSA’s design team developed an A3 folded pocket guide which focused on diagrams rather than words, and can be used by non English speaking drivers and those with lower levels of literacy. Printed on durable paper, the folded format mean that a driver can carry it in their cab. The pocket guide has been distributed to over 50,000 drivers in 4 months, with very positive feedback from industry in the UK and across the EU.

Commended: South Ayrshire Council - Cycle Map
Over the last 10 years, cycling in and around South Ayrshire has increased significantly. New infrastructure is being introduced to the network every year. To communicate this, South Ayrshire introduced a cycle map that was appealing to new cyclists. The team identified the z-card format as the most user friendly as it folds down to a pocket sized map, using one side for illustrating maps and the other to list information. A laminated finish ensures durability in the adverse Scottish weather. Sustrans and CWSS  assisted with this project through provision of funding. In the future, with the planned development of more off road routes, it is envisaged that a complimentary cycle map will be produced highlighting the off road mountain bike tracks in and around the area as these tracks are developed.

Commended: Lambeth Council - online print system
Lambeth’s online print was developed not only to save money, but also to meet the need to provide consistent materials and to better monitor what is being produced. The online print system offers 25 templates that staff can design and order, including posters, leaflets, banners, postcards, recruitment adverts (which can be sent straight to print) and ‘download only’ brochure covers. Staff log-in, choose their template, add copy and image(s), producing a professionally designed product in minutes. The system also includes sophisticated proofing and approval, enabling users to send work to others for checking and sign-off.

Commended: Derbyshire County Council - Secrets and Lies sexual health z card
Secrets and Lies is a credit card-sized leaflet designed to fit in a wallet or purse which folds out to reveal details of local services providing advice, support and information on sexual health and relationships. Messages on the card include delaying sex until you are ready, strategies on dealing with peer pressure, how to handle conversations with girlfriends and boyfriends, and facts about STIs, pregnancy and contraception. It also provides a list of services and clinics across Derbyshire where you can get emergency contraception and further information on sexual health. Derbyshire has distributed 20,000 Secrets and Lies Z-cards, aimed at young people aged 14 and above.
